As I explained before Ohio’s local sweetheart pageant, “sweetheart” or “sweeps” pageants are for women who have been runners up. At the local level these pageants are a last chance opportunity to get to the state pageant. At the National Sweetheart program, however, the winner does not qualify for Miss America; rather it is just a good experience.
Success at the National Sweetheart pageant often bodes well for women who continue to compete in the Miss America system. For example, Amanda Beagle was first runner up at Miss Ohio in 2003, she competed at the Sweetheart pageant, was named to the Top 10 there and came back to win Miss Ohio in 2004. Many National Sweetheart contestants go onto win their state and some Sweetheart winners have also won Miss America; the most recent examples are Leanza Cornett (Miss Sweetheart 1991 and Miss America 1993) and Tara Dawn Holland (Miss Sweetheart 1995 and Miss America 1997).
The pageant is sponsored by the Jaycees of Hoopeston, Illinois and is jokingly referred to as “crowns in a cornfield.” Check out the Miss Sweetheart website for more information or Turn For The Judges for contestant photos.
And GOOD LUCK KRISTIN!
